Replacing corroded panels that no longer heat, adding a radiator to a room that has never been warm enough, moving one to free a wall for a kitchen or a wardrobe, swapping a bathroom radiator for a heated towel rail, or fitting vertical radiators where horizontal wall space has run out. What decides whether it works is sizing. Radiator output depends on height, length and panel type, single, double, or double with double convector fins, and each room needs an output that matches its heat loss. A large bay window, an external corner, a room above a garage or a solid-walled Victorian front room all need more output than the floor area alone suggests. The second half of the job is balancing. Adding output anywhere changes how flow distributes across the whole system. Fit a new radiator without rebalancing and you often solve one cold room by creating another. We balance the system on completion using the lockshield valves, so each radiator takes its intended share. We work on domestic properties only, across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Leave It and It Gets Worse ## Why the cold room usually stays cold People replace a radiator because a room is cold and then find the new one is no better. That is almost always because the radiator was never the problem. Either it is starved of flow because the system has never been balanced, or the bottom of the circuit is packed with magnetite sludge, or the output was undersized for the room in the first place and the replacement was chosen to fit the same brackets. Fitting radiators onto a contaminated system carries a second cost. Every drain-down and refill without inhibitor brings fresh oxygenated water into contact with steel, accelerating the corrosion that produces the sludge in the first place. A few years of that and the new panels are cold at the bottom too, the pump is straining, and the boiler is being blamed for a system problem. There is also the damage risk. Radiator valves and tails are common leak points, particularly on old, brittle pipework in solid floors. A weeping tail behind a sofa can run for months before anyone sees it, and by then it is flooring and skirting rather than a fitting. ### Common mistakes we are called out to - Choosing a replacement radiator by the size of the old one instead of the room's heat loss. - Adding radiators to a system already running at its capacity, so everywhere else cools down. - Draining and refilling without re-dosing inhibitor. - Never balancing the system, then assuming the boiler is at fault. - Ignoring a radiator that is hot at the top and cold at the bottom, which is sludge, not air. In Detail ## Radiator types, valves and system considerations The specification detail behind a job that looks simple from the outside. ### Panel types and output Type 11 single panel radiators are slim and suit small rooms or restricted spaces. Type 21 and Type 22 double panels give far more output in the same wall length, which is usually what a cold room actually needs. Convector fins increase output further without increasing the footprint. Where wall space is tight, vertical radiators deliver the required output in a tall, narrow format, common in hallways, kitchens and modern conversions. Low surface temperature radiators are appropriate where there are safety considerations for children, elderly or vulnerable occupants. ### Towel rails and bathrooms A heated towel rail is not automatically a like-for-like replacement for a bathroom radiator. Many rails produce considerably less heat output than the panel they replace, so the bathroom ends up cold even though the towels are warm. We check the room's requirement before specifying one. Where the room needs both, options include a larger or dual-fuel rail, or a rail combined with a small panel radiator, so the bathroom stays warm in winter and the rail can still be used in summer. ### Valves, pipework and materials Every radiator we fit gets a thermostatic valve on one end and a lockshield on the other, which is what makes room-by-room control and system balancing possible. Angled, straight and corner valves are chosen to suit the pipework route rather than forcing the pipework to suit the valve. Pipework is copper, correctly sized, clipped and supported, and adapted where old microbore or awkward solid-floor runs are involved. Where existing tails are brittle or corroded we will say so and price replacing them rather than risk a leak behind a new radiator. ### When radiators are the symptom, not the cause A radiator cold at the bottom across the whole house means system contamination. In that situation new panels alone are wasted money, power flushing, correct inhibitor dosing and a magnetic filter are what restore heat output across the system. Similarly, if several radiators run cool while others are scalding, the answer is balancing and possibly pump or valve work rather than replacement.
